Staying on Lake Como offers a unique opportunity to explore a wide variety of hiking trails, each waiting to be discovered. Hiking in Como and the surrounding natural landscapes is a must-do experience, one that everyone should try at least once in their life.
Among the many trails, the mule track leading to Pigra from Argegno is considered one of the more challenging hikes near Como. The initial stretch features a steep incline, making it more suitable for experienced hikers who are accustomed to strenuous paths. As one of the more difficult walks around Lake Como, the trail requires a good level of fitness, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views that make the hike truly worthwhile.
The trail begins uphill from Via Cacciatore delle Alpi and continues toward Muronico, crossing the main road along the way. The path is mostly unpaved, with some cobblestone sections, mixed with paved areas and steps to help ease the steeper portions of the climb.
Upon reaching Muronico, you will pass through the charming village via narrow streets, eventually reaching a fork in the road. One path leads to the mule track toward Pigra, while the other leads to Dizzasco.
As you continue, the trail winds through the woods, steadily ascending while offering numerous opportunities to pause, catch your breath, and enjoy the stunning views below. The unpaved path allows you to immerse yourself in nature, and on clear days, the panorama of Lake Como and its surrounding towns is simply magnificent.
The steep ascent continues, winding around switchbacks, until you reach a small chapel dedicated to St. Anthony. Further along, you will arrive at the Church of Santa Margherita in Pigra. Once you reach the village, be sure to visit the funicular station, where you can enjoy another panoramic view that perfectly rewards your efforts.
Don’t miss a visit to the nearby Belvedere of Pigra, which offers a spectacular vantage point of the surrounding landscape, including views of Nesso, Bellagio, Tremezzina, and Argegno, as well as Mount San Primo, the Promontory of Balbianello, and Comacina Island.
