Como is a city brimming with history and beauty, offering many points of interest. If you have just one day to explore, here’s our suggested itinerary to make the most of your visit.
Start your day at Piazza Alessandro Volta, the vibrant heart of the city. This elegant square, filled with cafes, shops, and trendy spots, is dominated by the majestic statue of Alessandro Volta, created in 1838 by renowned sculptor Pompeo Marchesi.
From here, head left toward the lake, and you will arrive at Lungolario Trento, a picturesque promenade offering stunning views of the hills and the charming town of Brunate (to your right), home to the famous Brunate Funicular.
Straight ahead, you will spot a striking, 16-meter-high steel sculpture titled The Life Electric. Created by architect Daniel Liebeskind, this installation symbolizes the electric tension between two poles, representing the connection between light, water, and wind – a fitting tribute to Alessandro Volta, the father of electricity.
A little further along, don’t miss the magnificent Tempio Voltiano, built in 1927 in honor of Volta. Inside, you will find a collection of his original objects on display. Be sure to take a moment to relax in the lovely public gardens surrounding the temple.
Continuing on, you will reach the Monumento ai Caduti, a 30-meter-high monument dedicated to the fallen. A visit here is a must, as it offers the chance to climb to the top and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Como.
One of the highlights of your day will be the scenic stroll through the villas, a picturesque route that takes you past stunning estates built during the Austrian era in the 17th and 18th centuries. Notable villas include Villa Saporiti (also known as “La Rotonda”), the oldest Villa Gallia, and the impressive Villa Olmo, the largest and most famous of them all, with expansive gardens and direct access to the lake.
After the walk, head back along Lungolario Trieste to reach the Como-Brunate Funicular. This iconic funicular takes you on a journey up to Brunate, where you can admire Liberty-style villas and enjoy magical views over the lake.
End your day in Como with a visit to the Broletto Palace, dating back to the 1200s, and the adjacent Duomo. In addition to its stunning interior, the cathedral’s impressive height of 75 meters will leave you in awe.
